New to importing? Five things to sort out first
Get an EORI number
Every business moving goods in or out of the UK needs one. It’s free and usually issued quickly.
Know your commodity codes
Codes decide your duty rate and any licences or controls. We can classify your range for you.
Agree your Incoterms
Who pays freight, duty and VAT? Settle it with your supplier before goods are booked.
Plan duty and VAT
A deferment account and postponed VAT accounting can ease cash flow considerably.
Appoint a customs agent
Authorise us to act for you and we’ll handle declarations, queries and checks.
Customs clearance questions
Usually the commercial invoice, packing list, transport document (bill of lading, air waybill or CMR), your EORI number and any certificates of origin or licences. We’ll confirm exactly what’s needed for your goods.
Most declarations clear quickly once complete documents are received. Goods selected for checks or subject to port health controls can take longer, which is why we review paperwork before arrival.
We submit declarations electronically, so we can support shipments arriving across the UK. Tell us the port or airport and we’ll confirm the arrangements.
It lets VAT-registered importers account for import VAT on their VAT return instead of paying it at the border, which helps cash flow. We can declare it on your import entries.
